# Agentic AI

## Definition

AI systems capable of autonomously executing complex, multi-step tasks across various applications and environments to achieve a user's goal.

## The Shift: Oracle → Agent

A phase of AI where machines move beyond simply *answering prompts* in a chat interface to **executing complex, multi-step tasks and goals** on behalf of a user. Agentic AI can:

- Navigate web browsers
- Pull from data lakes
- Interface with multiple applications
- Complete workflows autonomously

This is the move from AI as an **oracle** (you ask, it answers) to AI as an **agent or digital twin** (you delegate, it acts).

## Where It Lives in the Fluency Model

Agentic AI is the substrate for **Level 3** of [[concept-ai-fluency-levels]] — AI Working For You. See the full progression in [[framework-3-levels-ai-fluency]].

## Connection to Other Concepts

- Agentic AI presupposes [[concept-unmetered-intelligence]] — agents that run constantly only make economic sense when inference is cheap.
- It is also the *enabler* of [[concept-natural-language-os]] — once you can speak intent, an agent must execute it across the stack.
- Defining your [[concept-automation-boundary]] becomes urgent as agentic capability grows.

## Caveat (from enrichment)

Not a "digital twin" utopia — agents hallucinate **15–30% on complex tasks** (Anthropic evals). Stanford CRFM's *Agent Fragility* studies show autonomy amplifies errors. Real adoption requires guardrails and observability.

Validating examples in 2024–2025: OpenAI's o1-preview reasoning models, Anthropic's Computer Use feature.
